So in all the talk about Lydia’s/Mary Kate’s paleness, I can’t believe that no one came up with the obvious explanation:

MK is an elf who had to leave Mirkwood when Thranduil decided that he wanted to be the only super-fabulous elf in the realm, and while she’s previously hidden it behind Lydia’s bright clothes and hair, her real heritage is slowly becoming apparent, hence Lydia’s growing paleness in recent episodes.
